The SAS band concert in Larnaca on Friday the 17th June 2005 included a host of stars, including Midge Ure, Paul Young and Roger Taylor of Queen. We didn’t know about it until a rumour spread down and became a ‘really, we had better check it out’
We bombed up to the municipal theatre at 9 pm, dark silence greeted us. We phoned a friend who was already there in the VIP seats, he told us where he was at the Anorthosis football stadium, so we bundled back in the car and again bombed through the unnavigable mess which is the new dual carriageway on the old ring road, yup there it was, people and cars. As it was an unplanned event we didn’t have much money with us but had a visa card, no they didn’t take plastic! We negotiated 3 cheap seats and managed to scrape together the £45 that would have been £75 if we had it. So glad we didn’t when we discovered the ‘better seats’ were in the stands and too far away from the action.
We had missed the first couple of numbers but didn’t mind when we realised that the sound was good and the music was great. Even the white bronco girls doing Abba was fun and when eventually the girls from the office got through to me on my mobile to tell me I had to go and pick up my 10 year old from a friends house because it was almost midnight, I was gutted. We left at a run, hoping to get back for the finale.
That of course didn’t happen, as I fell and mashed my knee on the concrete step that I didn’t see. But it was a great night, summed up by my 13 year old who said about the them all ‘It was cool.’ High praise indeed for a bunch of old dudes.
