The Pharos Trust is delighted to announce the Sixth International Pharos Chamber Music Festival to take place at the PASYDY Auditorium in Nicosia and at the Royal Manor House in Kouklia, Paphos from 28 May to 6 June 2006.

 

The Pharos Trust, having a strong commitment to artistic excellence, regularly invites some of Europe’s finest musicians to Cyprus for concerts throughout the year. Through

the Concert and Recital Series, for which the Foundation has established worldwide reputation, a great number of performances by outstanding soloists and chamber music ensembles from all over the world are presented, annually culminating with The International Pharos Chamber Music Festival, now in its sixth consecutive year. This year’s Festival, welcomes to Cyprus the Chilingirian Quartet as well as nine accomplished chamber musicians from the current international circuit, performing a range of works

for strings and piano by composers including Bach, Beethoven, Britten, Debussy, Mozart, Schumann and Shostakovich.

The Chilingirian Quartet is one of the world’s most celebrated and widely travelled ensembles, renowned for their thrilling interpretations of the great quartets and commanding performances of the contemporary repertoire. The Quartet was founded in 1971 by Levon Chilingirian and Philip De Groote. Whilst each member is a virtuoso musician, their success as a quartet has earned them the Royal Philharmonic Society’s coveted Chamber Ensemble Award. The Chilingirian is Quartet-in- Residence at the Royal College of Music in London , resident ensemble at the Lake District Summer Music Festival and in 2005 at the University of California at Irvine . Places on the Chilingirian's annual chamber music course run at West Dean in England are eagerly sought by aspiring young professional and amateur ensembles.  

 

 

Bengt Forsberg was born in 1952 in Edsleskog , Sweden . He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Gothenburg and then in London with Peter Feuchtwanger and in Copenhagen with Herman D. Koppel. He has given many concerts and made recordings with cellist Mats Lindström, violinist Nils-Erik Sparf, and mezzo soprano Anne Sofie von Otter with whom he has made many recordings on DGG, one of which (of Grieg songs) won a Gramophone Award as the best song record of 1995 and was voted 'Record of the Year'.

Alexander Chaushian studied at the  Yehudi  Menuhin  School , the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in  London and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in   Berlin

 

Alexander Chaushian studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School , the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin . He has been the recipient of numerous awards and has appeared with orchestras such as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields . Alexander Chaushian has performed recitals at the Harrogate Festival in England , the Kuhmo International Festival in Finland , La Jolla Festival in the USA , the Wigmore Hall, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris , Suntory Hall in Japan . Since 2002 he has acted as the artistic director of the Orpheus & Bacchus Festival in Bordeaux , France .

 

Levon Chilingirian was born in   Cyprus  to Armenian parents and was introduced to music from a very early age. When the Chilingirian family emigrated to   London  in 1960, Levon concentrated on the violin, studying at the Royal College of Music where he is now a professor.

His career as a recitalist was launched by winning the first prize in the 1969 BBC Beethoven Competition, followed by the Munich Duo first prize in 1971. The same year he formed The Chilingirian Quartet with three other ex-RCM students; the ensemble has become one of the most active and celebrated string quartets on the international scene with tours to fifty countries on six continents. Recently Levon Chilingirian became the musical director of Camerata Roman, a talented Swedish string ensemble. He has received the Cobbett Medal, the Royal Philharmonic Society's chamber music award and, in January 2000, an OBE in the Queen's Honours List for his services to music.

 

 

Jeremy Menuhin’s broad musical education included composition with Nadia Boulanger in  Paris , piano studies with Mindru Katz in  Israel and conducting with Hans Swarowsky in   Vienna

Jeremy Menuhin’s broad musical education included composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris , piano studies with Mindru Katz in Israel and conducting with Hans Swarowsky in Vienna . He has regularly given recitals at the Kennedy Center in Washington , the Philharmonie in Berlin , the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Salle Pleyel in Paris . Recent engagements have included performances with the Talich Quartet in Brussels, recitals in Fehmarn and at the Mitte Europa Festival in Germany and Beethoven Concertos in the Flanders and Gstaad Festivals.He has played with many leading orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, Salzburg Mozarteum and the chamber orchestras of Zurich, St Petersburg and Prague, as well as the English Chamber Orchestra.

Having established an international reputation for his performances on the fortepiano, Melvyn Tan made the decision to return publicly to the modern piano in 1995, performing at leading concert halls around the world, including the Wigmore Hall, Lincoln Centre, Théâtre du Châtelet, Musikverein and the Philharmonie. Orchestras with which he has worked include the BBC Symphony, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Budapest Concert, Salzburg Camerata and Mozarteum Orchestras, Netherlands Chamber, Los Angeles Symphony, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Melbourne Symphony. Melvyn’s partners have included cellist Steven Isserlis, violinist Christian Altenberger, the Škampa Quartet and fellow pianist, Ronald Brautigam.

 

Yuri Zhislin studied the violin at the   Moscow  Gnessin  Music  School  for musically gifted children with Ms Svetlova and later at the Royal College of Music with his father, Grigori Zhislin and Dr Felix Andrievsky.

Yuri is a Laureate and major prize-winner of various international competitions. He is high in demand at international festivals around the world, performing as a soloist and chamber musician in festivals in Bath , Chichester, Cheltenham, Seattle , Hohenems and Bordeaux , among others. He has appeared in major concert halls throughout the world, including the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Concertgebouw and has performed with BBC Concert Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the Belgrade Philharmonic, and the Lublin Philharmonic, to name a few. Yuri is founder and Artistic Director of the Russian Virtuosi of Europe, an Artistic Director of the Evaristo Valle International Music Festival in Spain and professor of violin at the Royal College of Music in London

 

Alexander Zemtsov was born in the Soviet Union into a highly musical family. He studied at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Hamburg and continued his education with the famous viola virtuoso Professor Michael Kugel in the Hogeschool of Music in Maastricht . Since the age of 19 Alexander has worked with several European orchestras and in 2002 was appointed Principal Viola with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Alexander Zemtsov is member of the new string ensemble The Hermitage Trio and a permanent member of the Razumovsky Ensemble, with whom he regularly performs in the Wigmore Hall Chamber Music Series. Zemtsov´s mastery and artistry have been widely recognized internationally and have brought him numerous prizes such as first prize at the Elise Meyer competition in Hamburg in 1997, and first prize at the 8th Brahms competition in Poertschach , Austria , in 2001.

 

Steven Isserlis is a cellist whose passion for music transcends conventional divisions. Acclaimed worldwide for his musicality and technique alike, he is equally at home in recital, in chamber music performances, on the concert platform with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and conductors – including most recently the Boston, Dallas and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Philadelphia and Philharmonia Orchestras

Steven Isserlis plays the Feuermann Stradivarius of 1730, kindly loaned by The Nippon Music Foundation of Japan.

Since his debut as a pianist, he has regularly been invited to appear with orchestras including the Yerevan Chamber Orchestra, Armenian Philharmonic, Portugal Symphonic Orchestra, the Ensemble Orchestral of Paris and the Paris Conservatory Orchestra.

He has had regular appearances at major festivals such as La Roque d'Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins, Cortona Festival, Festival of Menton, Auvers sur Oise, Piano en Vallois, Rheims (Flâneries Musicales), Cannes (Midem), Chamonix (Les Semaines Musicales du Mont Blanc), Les Arcs (Festival International), Séville (Music Season), Paris (Les TransClassiques) and Bagatelle (Chopin Festival) and has given recitals in Europe, the USA, Japan, Russia and the Middle East. Together with Nicolas Baldeyrou and Renaud Dejardin, he has formed the Mardirossian Trio.

 

Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s career successfully manifests itself in a number of creative ways. As a violinist, he works with the very best orchestras in Europe, Japan and the USA and performs with distinguished conductors. He is a regular guest at festivals in Salzburg , Lucerne , Edinburgh , Verbier, Ravinia and the BBC Proms and has been a highly successful festival director over many years at Korsholm Music Festival, Umea , Baku , Seattle and Cortona. Since 1990, Dmitry Sitkovetsky has developed a flourishing conducting career. He is now Principal Guest Conductor of the Russian State Symphony in Moscow and conducts orchestras regularly throughout Europe and USA . He has an active and varied recording career which includes all the major violin concerti, numerous chamber music works as well as orchestral works as conductor. Dmitry Sitkovetsky is the founding director of the New European Strings Chamber Orchestra. He has been a member of ASCAP since 1985, and his transcriptions of works are published by Doblinger, Sikorski and Schirmer’s.
