USL consists of four people: Liz Carlisle, Kart John, Mark Hill & Ambrose Reynolds. The group was formed in 1988 by Ambrose Reynolds and B.F Tin (who left in 1995), as an antidote to the problem of how to make music on a very low budget, the answer ?......... make your own instruments.
Founder member Ambrose Reynolds cut his musical teeth at an early age in the Liverpool Cat play Bass Guitar in various bands including- Pink Industry, Ded Byrds, and an early incarnation of Frankie Goes To Hollywood. He has recorded and produced more than a dozen records, including ten on his own label Zulu Records. Ambrose has a keen interest in all kinds of music including- Jazz, Drum & Bass, and World music.
Visual Artist and musician Mark Hill joined the group in 1990 improving and enhancing the somewhat limited instrument making skills of the two founding members. Mark has created most of the instruments that USL play and is constantly coming up with new ideas for instruments and sound sculptures. He has worked for various theatre companies and arts groups, designing stage sets and sound sculptures of a most unusual nature.
In 1992 the group was joined by lead drummer Karl John, who's boundless skills in Traditional African drumming styles has revolutionised USL's musical repertoire, creating a link between contemporary and ancient forms of music. Karl began drumming in 1982, during the post riot cultural renaissance that was occurring in Liverpool at the time. Working with leading lights such as Steel & Skin, Delado African Drum & Dance group.
Liz has been the administrator for USL since 1990, keeping company business on an even keel. In 1994 Liz also joined the creative team, showing her true colours as the all singing all dancing showgirl that she is. Liz brings with her a diverse knowledge of all kinds of music from classical to rave, that enriches the musical flavour of the group.
